The Blue Lagoon: A Musical

One boy. One girl. One island. No rules.

The Blue Lagoon: A Musical

A century ago, novelist Henry de Vere Stacpoole introduced the world to the unforgettable story of Richard and Emmeline, young cousins who are shipwrecked on a deserted tropical island, where they grow up experiencing the hardships and wonders of life, without any guidance from civilization.

In 2007, Washington theatergoers were the first to experience the timeless romantic tale onstage in “The Blue Lagoon: A Musical.” Jonathan Padget created the book, music and lyrics for the show, which he also produced, directed and designed for its premiere in the Capital Fringe Festival.

The production had a sold-out run and was staged with two performers (Kathleen Mason and Matthew McGloin) and a keyboardist (Padget). Nelson Pressley noted in The Washington Post that the show “happily splashes through [July 29 at 1409 Playbill Cafe]. …Restraint and snarkiness jostle for control. (Snarkiness wins.) Lovely melodic themes, two goofy performances and an inflatable baby pool as the lagoon in question — how Fringe is that?”
